To those dealing with fear, negativity, anger, & cynicism:
We all deal with this part of ourselves at one point or another in our lives. At this time in history, it seems we are unable to escape the clutches of this draining facet of either our own inner negative monologue, or of it’s voice around us. I felt called to write a letter to this inner cynic, not only for myself, but for all of us out there learning how to navigate this heavy aspect of ourselves & our fellow human neighbors.
Trust Your Triggers
Even though everything seems to be triggering for all of us at this time, we can also see this as a call to action. A call to face this part of ourselves that is the inescapable life draining sidekick: The inner negative voice, cynic, bully, & pessimist. How can we initiate change within ourselves? How can we cultivate a more loving inner voice so that we can do the same with our fellow humans? This is truly the lesson the inner pessimist (and outer ones) have to teach us.
May we all find the value and lessons this inner character offers which is the strength to find the light in the midst of fear!
Dear inner cynic & pessimist,
I have something to say about this whole thing regarding us getting so upset about everything going on at this time:
I have high hopes & a positive outlook for the future and so can you (if you simply make that choice). A positive outlook is not always as unrealistic & ignorant as you may claim….I feel you may just be very scared which is why you cling so much to “realism” “data”, & what is “truth.” I get it…it helps you feel safe! We all want to feel a sense of safety and empowerment. It’s OK! We can adopt a positive outlook, As long as we don’t focus too much on feeling angry & victimized. AND when we can embody a positive outlook, we may have more energy to mobilize ourselves towards a solution!
INNER CYNIC: “BUT ANGER IS VALID DUE TO ALL THE WRONGS IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW!”
Yes, Anger IS a catalyst to change, but if we become immobilized by it and just hamster wheel on bad news, social media & complaining, it does nothing but perpetuate the powerlessness you are so angry about.
INNER CYNIC: “BUT THIS ANGER IS MAKING PROGRESS TO GET BACK OUR POWER OVER THE WORLD’S INJUSTICES!”
It’s An Inside Job
I can understand that perspective. I also see those who are truly taking their “power” back are doing it from the inside out. They are getting out the the “blame game” and taking responsibility where they can in their lives; and that is truly the only power we have! And when that inner power comes online, these individuals are creating massive positive external change along with their internal transformation!
I Want Change Too!
But, I get it! You are tired of dishonesty, corruption, and seek justice and are impatient which is why you seek outward actions first. I want change too! But your role in our world seems to be very destructive. There are positive efforts of those whom are just as motivated by anger but are using that anger to formulate constructive steps contacting leaders, & forming rational & organized groups of citizens to create change. These folks are not all corrupt! They just aren’t in the spot light because good news doesn’t sell!
INNER CYNIC: “WE NEED LEADERS WHO WILL STAND UP FOR INJUSTICES!”
Passion With Compassion!
A good leader in a position of power inspires others through passion, with compassion! They peacefully present an organized logical & factual case (not based in fear due to hearsay) for their concerns directly to the problem at hand and they are consistent with their presentation until they get a response. I know some out there are angry with certain leaders, but I know there are many many good ones out there for every 1 bad one.
INNER CYNIC: “HOW IS THE WORLD GOING TO GET ANY BETTER?”
Lastly, But I also know that historically we are getting better! If you just zoom out and see all the progress we have made as a human species you may see that we are getting better!
INNER CYNIC: “YOU’RE OUTLOOK IS WRONG! I AM RIGHT! YOU ARE WEAK, VULNERABLE, & UNREALISTIC! YOU WERE NEVER GOOD ENOUGH!”
Same Story Different, Day, Life, Generation…all the Human Stories On Earth!
This seems to be what you always say… Not just to me, but practically everyone on this planet, whether you show up as an internal monologue or external dialogue between us humans. To be honest, it just sounds like fear…and fear is, has, and will continue to create the injustices you fight so passionately. Fear is also what seems to create you, feed you, and spread you throughout the world. I know you have been hurt, bullied, and vulnerable before you became scared and then angry. I feel sadness that we all go through that at some point in our lives which seems to create you in the first place.
I Know Your Secret
But I know a little secret…This fear is all you are made of, and luckily FEAR IS JUST A FEELING. That means you, inner cynic, are just a feeling. Feelings have internal power that create corruption in external power. So the solution to all of your efforts to protect us from this fear you perpetuate is simply to disengage & redirect. I know this will take practice, patience, perseverance, and forgiveness but I know that humans have the innate capacity to love, grow, and strive for better. And luckily, there are many of us in coming out of your shadow.
In closing, Inner cynic you have served us well in giving us opportunity to find strength in darkness, & to see what we are made of. The healthy pride we each feel when we master you by overcoming the limiting stories you tell us are priceless! Now that I see you for what you truly are, I am grateful, and am excited for the others on this planet to find out your dirty little secret…that you are nothing to fear and ultimately facing you in fact may be the answer to many of our problems!
Let the New Stories Begin
To each of us facing negativity: May we cultivate new stories that disengage the “negative,” “bad,” “wrong”, or “villain” inside of us as well as around us. May these efforts engage us in wild, joyfully creative and imaginative new & exciting positive stories, and may these tales grow inside of ourselves, and ultimately (eventually) become stories in our external world.
With a Positive Heart,
