Herbal Teas: The Natural Remedy for Almost Everything

Herbal teas have been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. From sore throats to stomachaches, there’s an herbal tea for just about everything.

But herbal teas aren’t just for when you’re feeling sick. They can also be a great way to boost your overall health and wellness.

Unique & Uncommon Herbal Teas

Of course, there are also some more bizarre herbal teas out there. For example, there’s dandelion tea, which is said to help with digestion and weight loss. And then there’s wormwood tea, which is said to help with nausea and vomiting. But be careful with wormwood tea, as it can also be toxic in high doses.

Our favorite uncommon teas

  • Goldenseal tea: This North American herb is said to boost the immune system and help to fight infection. However, it can also be toxic in high doses, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it.
  • Maté tea: This South American tea is high in caffeine and has a strong, earthy flavor. It’s said to be good for energy and focus.
  • Pu-erh tea: This Chinese tea is fermented and has a strong, earthy flavor. It’s said to be good for digestion and can also help to lower cholesterol.
  • Ginkgo biloba tea: This Chinese herb is said to improve circulation and memory. However, it can interact with certain medications, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it.

When Should You NOT Drink Herbal Tea?

Herbal teas are generally safe to drink, but it’s important to be aware of the potential contraindications. Some herbal teas can interact with medications, while others can be harmful to certain people.

Here are some common herbal tea contraindications:

  • Ginger tea: Ginger tea can interact with blood thinners, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it.
  • St. John’s wort: St. John’s wort can interact with many medications, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it.
  • Echinacea: Echinacea can interfere with the immune system, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it if you have an autoimmune disease.
  • Peppermint tea: Peppermint tea can interfere with the absorption of some medications, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it.  Peppermint can also decrease breast milk supply.
  • Chamomile tea: Chamomile tea can cause drowsiness, so it’s important to avoid it if you’re taking medication that also causes drowsiness.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s always best to talk to your doctor before taking any herbal tea.

It’s also important to note that herbal teas are not regulated by the FDA, so it’s important to buy them from a reputable source.

Celebrities Favorite Teas

Herbal teas are a great alternative to highly caffeinated hot drinks such as coffee and espresso.  The benefits of herbal tea are also enjoyed by celebrities to support their own health & wellness.

  • Keira Knightley: The actress loves chamomile tea for its calming effects.
  • Jennifer Aniston: The actress is a fan of green tea for its health benefits.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow: The actress is a big believer in the power of herbal tea. She has her own line of herbal teas called Goop Tea.
  • Victoria Beckham: The fashion designer loves peppermint tea for its digestive benefits.
  • Russell Brand: The comedian is a fan of ginger tea for its ability to relieve nausea.

Blending Herbal Teas

Herbal tea blends are the best thing to keep in your kitchen medicine cabinet to support natural health & wellness.  Herbal tea blends are a great way to get the most out of the healing power of herbs. When you blend different herbs together, you create a synergistic effect that is greater than the sum of its parts.

For example, a blend of chamomile, lavender, and peppermint can be used to promote relaxation and sleep. A blend of ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon can be used to boost the immune system and fight off infection. And a blend of green tea, echinacea, and ginseng can be used to improve energy and focus.

So next time you’re feeling under the weather, reach for a cup of herbal tea blend. It might just be the natural remedy you need to feel better.  Check out our upcoming classes for our next “Blending Herbal Tea” class with one of our local herbalists.  This is a great way to dive deeper into the benefits of herbal tea and learn how to customize a tea remedy just for you.
